Intel’s new MMX Pentium processors promise a welcome boost to virtually all applications. But the wait may not be over for software and hardware developers and graphics individual professionals pursuing with disk- and memory-intensive applications.
Industry think tanks say that Intel’s new chip set, the 430TX, which is expected in the near future, will offer further performance enhancements for applications that stress disk and memory I/O.
The systems using the 430TX chip set should appeal to developers and power professionals. Anyone who is memory-bandwidth starved will want to wait a little more time.
Intel started shipping 430TX core logic chip sets for MMX systems in september, with PCs based on the new design due within the next two months. The 430TX design enhances quality of MMX system performance by increasing the maximum data rate accessible to IDE hard disks, and by adding an optimized interface for synchronous DRAM (SDRAM) system memory.
Applications such as Adobe Photoshop and Web development tools should enjoy enhanced performance on systems outfitted with the 430TX chipset. However, home and business systems running productivity or CD-ROM applications simply put enough stress on disk and memory I/O to yield major advantage.
